Nature works consistently and predictably.

  1. Otherwise it couldn’t be described by laws.

Our senses are trustworthy.

  1. If we cannot trust we’re seeing what is, we cannot study what is.

Nature can be understood Our reasoning is valid. Intelligibility of nature. Contingency of nature..

  1. If we cannot trust we’re seeing what is, we cannot study what is.
Why does nature work consistently and predictably?

  1. These laws describe what nature does but not why.
  2. The problem is that
  3. every natural explanation
  4. needs its own explanation

  • Eg. Why do things fall?
      • What is gravity?
          • Why are objects attracted to each other?
              • Why do objects with mass attract each other?
                  • Why do they warp space?
                      • any natural explanation
                        will need its own explanation

  1. What is the ultimate cause?
Isaac Newton who discovered the Law of Gravity was surprised that objects seemed to interact without touching1.
  1. In response to a letter from Bishop Richard Bentley asking his thoughts about the ultimate cause of gravity, he wrote that he believed it to be:
  2. Immaterial
Always acting everywhere in nature (universal)
    Divine
  3. Summarized as constant spirit action.
  1. This echoes the Bible:
  2. [Jesus] is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. (Hebrews 1:3)
… all things were created through [Jesus] and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (Colossians 1:16-17)
in other words
the Laws of Nature
describe the way that
God constantly upholds the universe

1 Concept called “action at a distance”.

How do we know our senses are trustworthy?
See Hear Touch Taste Smell
What we know about nature is because of our senses — what we see, hear, touch, taste and smell. see hear touch touch smell
See Hear Touch Taste Smell
See Hear Touch Taste Smell
But how is it that we know that our senses are trustworthy?
Senses can’t be tested using science
(because you can’t do science without
using the senses you’re trying to test)
This would be like measuring
a ruler with the same ruler
This knowledge comes preinstalled
(it’s not learned)
We start with this knowledge
(so it’s not learned, but preinstalled)
This knowledge doesn’t come from us,
so it must have been given to us
Knowledge exists in minds,
so it must have come from a mind
This mind must know everything
(otherwise it could be mistaken)
(to know something for certain,
you must know nothing contradicts it,
which requires knowing everything)
& belong to someone who can’t lie
(otherwise it couldn’t be trusted)

This is how God is described (in the Bible)
Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite. (Psalm 147:5)
it is impossible for God to lie (Hebrews 6:18)
God, who cannot lie (Titus 1:2)
